Picture Gallery: A Basement Conversion
Part Three [ 1 - 2 - 3 ]

Custom Cabinets and Shelving: A Built-In Hutch.

Here's a closer look at the finished result of the custom cabinet set we were following before. As you can see, the cabinets really do blend seamlessly into the design of the wall. At "countertop" level, you'll also see that we got two outlets installed for easy accessibility, ready to power up a computer, television, or, as is the case in this photo, a radio. The shelving above is adjustable, ready to adapt to whatever storage needs may arise for the future.

Surprise! There's Still Some Basement Left.

This conversion project was huge and ended up covering a lot of area, but we still managed to leave something of the original basement. These double doors open wide from one of our finished room to access the untouched part of the basement. The wide opening allows for large items to be more easily moved into basement storage, and the design of the doors is such that when they are closed, they compliment the wall to such a degree that they essentially become part of it; you might not even notice they're there. So while we retain the functionality of the basement area that remains, we can still allow ourselves to forget about it just by closing the doors.

A Large Storage Closet and Built-In Shelving.

Behind those doors is the first walk-in closet we mentioned on the first page of this gallery, the one hiding the breaker box and the area beneath the stairs. There's plenty of room in there for storage while still allowing walk-in accessibility to the circuit breakers. On the wall next to the closet which borders the stairwell, we've installed built-in bookshelves, making the most out of what otherwise would have been a pretty limited space.

The Stairs.

Remember the stairs as they were when we started, covered with old kitchen tile? Since they now access a more livable space, it only seems right that they got a facelift, as well. The stairs are now covered in a comfortable, more presentable carpet (though nothing too slippery, of course), and the walls along the stairwell have been covered with the same paneling as the walls in the new room, up to the height of the basement ceiling. At the base of the stairs you'll find the master lightswitch for the new rooms, and, now that we've created a livable space here, a smoke detector is also visible. Safety is always important.

One Last Look At Our Finished Project.

A final look at our conversion project. Doesn't look like a basement, does it?
